Why it’s important to learn our heritage language: The perspective of a linguistics academic
As linguists, we understand the process of language acquisition and maintenance, which is why we are set to help Shona and Ndebele diasporic children learn their languages and sustain their identity and culture. I believe that the gap that has been created by migration can be narrowed through language maintenance where communities in the diaspora and their government authorities work together to equip the future generations with their native language heritage.
